Old-Fashioned Soaps

“Lye soap” is a colloquial term for soap as the pioneers made it. Technically, it refers to the cold process method of using lye to turn fats into soap. At Herbaria, we use lye with vegetable oils such as olive oil for every bar we make. All our soaps are lye soaps. For greater detail about our soap making, see All-Natural Ingredients.

The basis of our Brown Windsor soap comes from Perfumery and Kindred Arts, a Comprehensive Treatise on Perfumery by Richard Cristiani, published in Philadelphia in 1877. Even then, the author referred to the recipe as Old Brown Windsor Soap. The original soap was made in Windsor, England, and exported around the world. Brown Windsor was said to be a favorite of Napoleon, a notorious lover of scent. Cristianis recipe called for lavender, bergamot, caraway, petitgrain, cinnamon, and clove. We tested various proportions of these essential oils and chose the blend we found most satisfying.

There's old-time goodness in this all-vegetable Castile soap. Old Fashioned Lye Soap is great for bathing, shampooing, and washing clothes. Its only scent is the pure, clean soap smell. The old soap-making process we use retains natural glycerin. We don't want to brag, but this is probably a finer soap than Grandma used to make. We start with fresh food-grade oils in our bars. Together they make a bar that is moisturizing, that lathers well, and is long-lasting.

The root beer scent, also associated with birch beer and sarsaparilla, comes from essential oil of white birch. The hint of wintergreen is also from birch. Ground sassafras root and bark is added to the bar to lightly exfoliate the skin. The sassafras also makes the bar a lovely purple shade. Like all Herbaria soaps, Sassafras Birch is first and foremost a great soap with terrific lather and moisturizing hemp seed oil.
