Bergamot Soaps and Products

The aroma of bergamot, Citrus bergamia, is essentially citrus, with fruity, sweet, warm, spicy, floral tones. We love it!

The traditional fragrances of Germany—bergamot, cinnamon leaf, lavender, lemongrass and orange—blend and balance magnificently in Black Forest Chamomile. Faintly floral but not flowery, spicy but not piquant, it is a very popular bar among both men and women. The soap is richly superfatted with shea butter to provide a long lasting moisturizer. The beautiful color and gentle texture come from crushed chamomile blossoms.

The lemony, floral notes of our Italian Bergamot bar come from essential oil of bergamot, extracted from the peel of an orange-like citrus fruit that grows in southern Italy along the Mediterranean coast. The bergamot essential oil we use is bergaptene free so there’s no problem in regards to sun exposure. Bergamot has long been used in perfumery. It gave its fragrance to the original Eau de Cologne developed in Germany in the 17th century and continues to be a favorite ingredient in many popular women’s and men’s perfumes and colognes. The soft, spicy scents in the soap come from lavender and clove, which blend with the bergamot to make an especially fresh and clean aroma. We add hemp seed oil as a skin softener. Aromatherapists believe that bergamot perks you up when you feel stress and anxiety. We think you will enjoy this delightfully fragrant soap.

The basis of our Brown Windsor soap comes from Perfumery and Kindred Arts, a Comprehensive Treatise on Perfumery by Richard Cristiani, published in Philadelphia in 1877. Even then, the author referred to the recipe as “Old Brown Windsor Soap.” The original soap was made in Windsor, England, and exported around the world. Brown Windsor was said to be a favorite of Napoleon, a notorious lover of scent. In the U.S., the soap was sold from the time of Lewis and Clark through the Civil War and into the Twentieth Century. By now, you must be wondering what it smells like and why it was so popular. Cristiani’s recipe called for lavender, bergamot, caraway, petitgrain, cinnamon, and clove. We tested various proportions of these essential oils and chose the blend we found most satisfying. The spiciness you’ll smell in the bar comes from cinnamon and clove. The sweet citrus scent comes from bergamot, a lemon-like fruit from Italy; the green citrus aroma comes from petitgrain, distilled from the twigs and leaves of bitter orange trees. You’ll love the caraway. This essential oil, prized in perfumery, adds a sophisticated twist. Lavender ties it all together. We add shea butter and avocado oil for extra moisturizing. Like all of our soaps, this a splendid skin care bar. Our Brown Windsor looks like granite—russet brown with flecks of pure white soap. Coffee makes the rich brown color but adds no aroma. Our Coffee soap is scented entirely differently, with coffee bean extract. Brown Windsor joins our collection of traditional soaps like Old Fashioned Lye, Bay Rum, and Lavender Oatmeal. We are proud that these and many others are sold at National Parks and Historic Sites.

Our natural deodorants keep you feeling fresh from shower to shower. They eliminate odor-producing bacteria and smell fantastic. They utilize essential oils both for enchanting scents and for sustained antibacterial activity. Alcohol, the main ingredient in our deodorant, kills bacteria also. We do not use synthetically-produced alcohol. Instead, we use grain alcohol denatured (made undrinkable) with lavender essential oil. Our deodorants are not antiperspirants, which reduce sweat by clogging pores and often contain aluminum compounds. Our sprays allow underarm skin to breathe as nature intended.

Bombs away! Drop a Caracalla in your bath water. Watch it fizz and bubble as it dissolves. Smell the magnificent fragrance releasing. Step into your private spa. Lie back and relax. Breathe deeply. Your bath becomes soft and silky from powdered clays or finely ground oatmeal and Epsom salt. Enjoy the feeling of well-being as your stress floats away. Caracalla releases moisturizing organic high oleic sunflower oil to cover your entire body. The oil readily absorbs into your skin through your pores, which are open from the warm water. Your skin will feel velvety. We did not invent bath bombs (or soap for that matter), but as with all Herbaria products, we use only natural colorings and essential oils for scent and aromatherapy. You’ll want to try them all. Any Caracalla makes a superb gift for men or women.

To maintain and enhance the color, texture, and appearance of your complexion, apply Biotherapy Beauty Mask once a week. Truly an enjoyable experience. You will gently and thoroughly cleanse, detoxify and tone the precious skin of your face. We offer two formulations, each slightly different. According to your skin type, choose Normal to Dry or Normal to Oily. Each jar contains enough to make about ten treatments. What does our mask do for your face? Finely ground French green clay gently scrubs skin, opens pores and permeates the lines of your face. It draws out toxins and absorbs impurities. Colloidal oatmeal hydrates, soothes and exfoliates. Aloe vera helps to moisturize and heal skin cells. The essential oils in the formula add antiseptic and mildly astringent qualities. The combination of lavender, bergamot and lime delights and refreshes. How do you use it? In a small bowl, mix two teaspoons of powder with about two teaspoons of water to make a creamy paste. Apply the paste to your face in a circular motion, avoiding the eyes. Leave on the skin five to fifteen minutes. As long as it is moist, it’s still working. For delicate skin, leave on less time. When the mask is dry, rinse it off with warm water. Rub softly with fingertips to remove the mask completely. You’ll love the way your face looks and feels!

In color and scent, Rosy Bouquet comes closest to the fresh bloom of a pink rose. It is musky, sweet, spicy, and heady. We’ve created this complex scent and beautiful color using six essential oils and pure henna oil. This bar has been years in the making because genuine rose oil would be far too costly to use in a soap and our products never contain synthetic fragrance oils. The henna oil we use is different from the powdered henna used for hair color and decorative skin art. We have not seen any sign of staining on skin or washcloths. You’ll find this bar to be a joy because not only does it smell delightful but also it is extra moisturizing. The smooth bar has no added texture and makes a silky, creamy lather. We invite you to an elegant, deeply satisfying bathing experience.

Herbaria Beard Oil soothes and conditions your beard and the skin under it without being greasy. You’ll look good all day and your skin will be itch-free. In response to customer requests, we developed this odorless blend of moisturizing organic oils: jojoba, high oleic sunflower seed and babassou. These oils won’t clog pores but will soften coarse whiskers, keep hair follicles healthy and leave your beard shiny. Terrific for your hair, too. Scents or Nonscents We offer one unscented variety and three scented. The aromatic essential oils of Herbaria Beard Oil won’t overwhelm or irritate like synthetic fragrance oils. Our Beard Oil is only lightly scented not only to avoid allergic reaction to the essential oils, but because it will be under your nose all day. You and anyone close to you will enjoy our three scented varieties: Bay Rum is spicy with a touch of sweet orange. Vetiver is woodsy, with cedarwood oil, vetiver and bergamot. Key Lime, bright and refreshing, combines lime, lavender and frankincense. How to Use Shower and shampoo your beard. The aim is to prevent bacteria from growing on your face. Any of our soap varieties will do the job nicely. Antibacterial agents are unnecessary. Now, towel your beard nearly dry. Put a few drops of Beard Oil in your palms, rub them together and then apply the oil to your whiskers. A little goes a long way. Work the oil into your beard and down to your skin. Comb it through, and then style it to look neat and groomed. The image we’ve chosen for our Beard Oil label is an 1892 self-portrait of the dapper American photographer, William Henry Jackson.

Ground red rice, like oatmeal, provides a pleasurably bumpy ride when you use this mildly exfoliating soap. The other red in the name comes from red yeast rice, used in Traditional Chinese Medicine and known as hóng qū mǐ. Eat five bars of this soap a week and you’ll lower your blood pressure. In truth, red yeast rice is often used as a food colorant. It tints our bars a warm mahogany. The scent is harder to explain. It's a blend we created of eight essential oils to make a tantalizing natural perfume. It has a rich, warm, light spicy scent. The moisturizer we've chosen for this bar is mango butter. Mango butter is highly unsaponifiable, which means that it doesn’t turn to soap. It remains a butter that will soften, smooth and moisturize rough, dry skin.

The bright yellow color of our Saffron Gold comes from Spanish saffron. You can see its yellow-orange threads throughout the bright yellow bar. This treasured spice in the soap adds a sensuous scent to the citrusy blend of nine essential oils. This soap not only looks and smells good, it’s also really good for you. Saffron Gold is superfatted with mango butter, expeller pressed from the seeds of mangos. The butter softens, soothes and moisturizes dry skin. Saffron is one of the plants used to dye the robes of Buddhist monks. If you see a bit of yellow on your washcloth, try laundering it with oxygen bleach.
