Premium Soaps

Premium soaps cost more because the essential oils in them are more expensive. We never use synthetic fragrance oils. Enjoy real almond, frankincense, vetiver, and other exotics. Who needs artificial chocolate flavor? Our Chocolate soap has the real thing, an absolute of Theobroma cacao.

Vetiver has long been a popular scent with both women and men, and is often used as the base note in both perfumes and colognes. Vetiver imparts a robust, woody aroma, warm and comforting. In this soap, vetiver is one of three essential oils that complement each other deliciously. Coriander adds a touch of spiciness, may chang a lemony freshness. If you’ve been a fan of our Indonesian Safflower bar, you’ll also enjoy this close cousin. Vetiver Walnut is more earthy; Indonesian Safflower a bit more floral. Finely ground English walnut shells add a scrub that invigorates and exfoliates your skin as you soap up. You will feel fully clean. To top off your skin care, we’ve added sweet almond oil for a soothing moisturizer.

When the Missouri Botanical Garden asked us to create an exclusive bar honoring its 150th anniversary, we crafted this uniquely herbal and peppery soap. We tested many blends of plant oils to develop the bar’s sophisticated fragrance. When we were finally satisfied, we sent a bar to perfumer Thierry Masson of La Rochelle, France, to evaluate the scent. He wrote back enthusiastically. “This bar has good balance—it’s woody, fresh and spicy.” Each ingredient of the soap reflects the Garden’s mission to discover and share knowledge about plants and their environment. To remember the Garden’s founder, Henry Shaw, we selected a popular scent from his Victorian era, lavender, as a familiar note in the soap’s luscious bouquet. To suggest Missouri, we added cedarwood oil with its resinous aroma. To recognize the Garden’s preservation of biodiversity around the world, we chose katrafay, Cedrelopsis grevei, a little known plant from Madagascar with a captivating smell. Vibrant fresh green peppercorn oil, also from Madagascar, adds the finishing note in our Shaw’s Garden bar. The natural green color of the bar comes from both the powder and the leaf of wild nettle plants. Nettle is a vitamin-rich herb found all over the world. Like all of our bars, Shaw’s Garden will pamper your skin with moisturizing emollients.

The bright yellow color of our Saffron Gold comes from Spanish saffron. You can see its yellow-orange threads throughout the bright yellow bar. This treasured spice in the soap adds a sensuous scent to the citrusy blend of nine essential oils. This soap not only looks and smells good, it’s also really good for you. Saffron Gold is superfatted with mango butter, expeller pressed from the seeds of mangos. The butter softens, soothes and moisturizes dry skin. Saffron is one of the plants used to dye the robes of Buddhist monks. If you see a bit of yellow on your washcloth, try laundering it with oxygen bleach.

We’ve recently discovered muhuhu essential oil. It's wonderfully fragrant. It's commonly known as African sandalwood because it smells quite similar to Indian sandalwood. Muhuhu smells woody, sweet and faintly floral. We get lots of requests for a sandalwood soap but genuine essential oil of sandalwood is extremely expensive. If you find something called sandalwood soap, we’ll bet it’s made with synthetic fragrance. Sandalwood, like rosewood, is endangered. We do not use essential oils from endangered species. We consulted the Missouri Botanical Garden and received the okay to use muhuhu. “It’s near threatened but it’s easy to raise. Not endangered at this point,” a researcher told us. (We also learned the proper binomial of muhuhu is Brachylaena huillensis, rather than the B. hutchinsii one sees on many websites.) Muhuhu essential oil is nonethless rare. We could have diluted it with less costly essential oils, but we want you to enjoy the pure scent of the muhuhu. Italian clay makes the bar a soft orangey color. We’ve superfatted it with unrefined shea butter because shea comes from Africa as well and it is a superior moisturizer to add to soap. Africans use muhuhu for its antimicrobial and aphrodisiac properties. However, little is known of this oil, so we cannot recommend it for use by pregnant women, infants or children.

Indonesian Safflower makes people crazy. In addition to the lovely safflower blossoms scattered throughout the bar, it contains a heady blend of sweet basil, ylang ylang, vetiver and patchouli. It's our strongest scented soap. After a bath with this, you'll be looking for your sari. Basil oil is said to aid concentration and clarify the mind and ylang ylang is reputed to stimulate the senses and induce feelings of well-being. You will definitely feel altered after an experience with this bar.

These two ancient fragrances have been revered for over 5,000 years. Renowned as the gift of the Magi to the baby Jesus, and even more valuable than the gold they brought, frankincense and myrrh offered a multitude of medicinal qualities in addition to their heavenly scents. As with all our soaps, Herbaria does not use imitation fragrances. To make this soap, we add genuine steam distilled essential oils imported from Somalia. These costly oils account for the bar’s premium price. The frankincense is derived from a resin of the Boswellia carterii tree; the myrrh is a resin from the Commifora myrrha tree. Finely ground Rhassoul clay, from the Atlas Mountains of Morocco, is marbled into this bar to provide a mineral-rich toner. Shea butter, also from Africa, moisturizes and protects your skin. Homeopathic literature claims that frankincense is spiritually healing and calming, and also skin-regenerative, antiseptic, anti-carcinogenic, anti-inflammatory and an antidepressant. It can be especially beneficial to the respiratory system for coughs, bronchitis, colds and flu. We make no claims—we simply believe you will find this soap a royal treasure.

“Why coffee soap?” you may ask. Because the aroma of good coffee is an exquisite pleasure derived from its complex of 28 odorants. In this fruity, earthy, spicy bar, you will also discover vanilla, honey, butter and more. The scent of coffee can invigorate you and reset your sense of smell. Use it in your morning shower or at the kitchen sink, where it will remove strong food odors. We use costly coffee oil derived from select Coffea arabica beans through a supercritical CO2 extraction method. The process is nontoxic and employs no alcohol or petroleum products. Coffee oil is also the only colorant in this deep golden bar. We cannot create the delicate natural scent of this soap from instant coffee or synthetic fragrances. Cocoa butter in the soap supplies a rich moisturizer and complements the coffee fragrance. We tried adding coffee grounds, but we didn’t like the insoluble specks that remained. We preferred a smooth and creamy bar with our characteristic rich lather.
